Fastest way to get help
Email bassamkamal.py@gmail.com. Say what you were doing, what happened, and which iPhone or Mac you are on. Settings shows the version at the foot of the Page tab; including it saves a round trip. Expect a reply within a few days.
Adding books
The app opens EPUB and PDF. Add one with the plus button on the shelf, or share a book to In My Voice from Files, Mail or Safari. The file is copied into the app, so moving or deleting the original afterwards does not break the book.
If a book will not open, the app says why rather than showing a blank one. A DRM-protected book from a store cannot be opened by any app but that store's own. A scanned PDF with no text layer has nothing to read aloud or search.
Voices
- System voices work with no download. iOS has better ones than the default under Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices.
- The neural voice is an optional download of about ninety megabytes, from the Voice tab. It sounds much better and takes longer to make each chapter. It is not backed up to iCloud; it downloads again if you restore a phone.
- Your own voice is ten seconds of you reading a passage. Record it somewhere quiet, close to the phone, and start reading straight away rather than leaving silence at the front. The app scores the take and tells you the one thing worth changing.
Waiting for audio
A neural chapter is made on your phone, not fetched from a server, so the first part of a chapter takes a little while and the rest arrives behind it while you listen. Pressing play always takes priority over anything being prepared in the background.
Prepare and Make audiobook build a chapter or a whole book ahead of time and keep it. Kept audio survives the cache being reclaimed and plays with no model at all, so a book prepared in a voice you later delete still reads aloud. Manage what is kept, and how much space it takes, under Voice.
Preparing is real work on the phone's Neural Engine. With the app in the background and nothing playing, iOS gives it a limited amount of time and then suspends it. Whatever was finished is saved, and it carries on where it left off when you come back.
Recall, the Board, and AI
The recall card and the Board can run on this device with no key and nothing sent anywhere, or on Gemini or Azure OpenAI with a key you paste in Settings. The app uses the provider you chose and no other. If it fails, it says so rather than sending your book somewhere else.
On-device answers need Apple Intelligence, which not every device and region has. If Settings says it is not ready, either wait for it or add a key.
Nothing the model sees is ever ahead of where you have read, so asking about a book cannot spoil it.
Space on the phone
Read-ahead audio lives in the cache and clears itself. Prepared audiobooks do not: they are yours until you delete them, under Voice, where each reading is listed with its size. Deleting a book from the shelf now deletes everything the app kept about it, prepared audio included.
Privacy
No account, no ads, no analytics. Your books and your reading stay on your device unless you deliberately turn on a cloud feature. The full policy is at Privacy policy.
